Tonight I watched the first of Ken Burns' seven-part documentary on World War II aptly named "The War."
Wow.
A ton of things occurred to me as I sat riveted to my television for the opening episode. Here are a few of those thoughts. First, everyone of a certain age (not suitable for young eyes or minds) should take in this work. Second, I know next to nothing about World War II. Third, I have a different appreciation for Irving Berlin's holiday staple "White Christmas" and can almost imagine American soldiers listening to the melodies and lyrics and dreaming about home. Finally, I am going to often make an effort to find and thank a veteran.
As a photojournalist, I was fascinated with the still photographs in the film. I can only imagine what it would have been like to be a combat photographer during World War II or any war for that matter. I am thankful that a ton of photos were preserved from the important (and often dark) chapter in world history. I'm also thankful that Ken Burns and his team have presented the work for the consumption of the many.
Check it out. Please.
